Introduction
In E-Commerce and online communication systems, security of information is extremely important. Businesses exchange sensitive information such as passwords, banking details, and customer data through digital networks. To protect this information from unauthorized access and cyber threats, cryptography is used.
Meaning of Cryptography
Cryptography refers to the process of converting readable information into coded or unreadable form to protect it from unauthorized users.
Definition: Cryptography is the science of securing information by converting data into coded form so that only authorized users can access and understand it.
The readable information is called Plain Text, while the coded information is known as Cipher Text.
Objectives of Cryptography
- Protect confidentiality of information
- Prevent unauthorized access
- Ensure data integrity
- Provide authentication of users
- Secure online transactions
Types of Cryptography
-
1. Private Key Cryptography:
Uses a single secret key for encryption and decryption of information.
-
2. Public Key Cryptography:
Uses two keys — a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption.
